Hip dysplasia is a sore situation of the hip joint in dogs. Its source is thought to be caused by a mixture of genetics, surroundings, premature growth and diet. It happens most commonly in the follow breeds of dogs:
- Labrador retrievers
- German shepherd
- Golden retrievers
These large-breed dogs are more commonly affected because they can grow at such a speed that their bones are not able to keep up. High protein diets can lead to quick growth in puppies.
In a normal dog the femur bone fits nicely into the acetabulum, which allows this joint to move in such a large range. However in cases of hip dyslasia this joint actually comes loses, and the femur bangs the acetabulum. Symptoms are apparent after apparent after 6 to 12 months of age. This is the time at which the most physical growth occurs in puppies.
When hip dysplasia is found early usually when the dog is about one year old, surgery can be formed to help the dog. This surgery almost always restores the dog to its normal state.
Dogs past a certain age will need to be kept fit to stop aggravation of the joint, sadly in some dogs the pain is so bad that the pain cannot be fixed with medication.
